8/22/25 Devlog 1 - Let the Games Begin!
I have had the idea of making a Japanese-style Atari Adventure-type game for a while now, and today I have decided to start it for a few reasons. Firstly, my portfolio is tiny, consisting of 2 games (not including any scratch games, which I've made dozens of). So, I want to increase my portfolio with this small game. Secondly, this game will be lots of fun for me to make because I love Atari's Adventure, and I get to add a spice of Japanese culture (which I love) and language (which I am studying).
Anyways, now let's get to the devlog part. I decided what sections I was gonna make, which were the following: starting area, classroom, dojo, sparring pad, swordplay area, archery area, workout area, courtyard, bamboo maze, graveyard, forest, cave, and main shrine.
Next, I decided how I was gonna split the rooms. I decided to go with a 6x6 grid, which gave me 36 rooms; however, the final shrine room will be a big room consisting of 4 rooms, so in total, there will be 33 rooms.
After that, I organized the section layout strategically on Krita, and then proceeded to add where the doors will approximately be placed. I thought of adding that document here, but decided against it, as then you'd know all the door placements that will happen in the future, allowing you to breeze through the game for the most part, which is not something I'd want. As this game is intended to be a strategic, puzzle, adventure type of game, not a follow this guide to beat if ya catch my drift.
Finally, I began drawing tiles on Piskel, as the whole map will be made with tiles (or at least a super high majority of it). I drew the starting area and courtyard tiles today.
Tomorrow, I hope to begin coding in Godot and creating the basics, which are a player, player movement, main menu scene, starting area scenes 1 through 4, and courtyard scenes 1 through 4. Hopefully tomorrow me does that, but we'll just have to wait and FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
